GALLE

The Galle Fort is a piece of history over 400 years old and counting, and while remaining mostly unchanged on the outside, the fort is pulsating with life within. It covers 16.5sqkm, and was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, and further fortified by the Dutch in 1649. It was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. As such, the Galle Fort has retained most of its outward appearance since colonial times, though this has not prevented residents from renovating the interior. Galle Fort has an abundance of trendy shops, world class restaurants, churches, temples and museums, all within walking distance of each other. There are also several places of interest outside of the fort and throughout the Galle district, from beaches, to shops to other historical and cultural sites.
